YEAR 3 BASKETBALL AND RUGBY GALA DAYS On Saturday 5th April, the Year 3 boys participated in the first of their four Gala Days for the year. This was the Basketball Gala Day held in both Gymnasiums at Summer Hill. It was an action-packed morning of cheering, colour and enthusiastic boys and parents. The boys all seemed to have a fun-filled morning and it was apparent that they had developed their basketball skills considerably over the six weeks of skills and games. Each of the Preparatory School Houses fielded two teams, with the Junior School managing two Dulwich teams, but only a single team for Chambers and School. Congratulations to Dulwich and the Junior School School House who were the top two Houses, followed by Henderson, Hilliard, School and Archer. Well done to the Hilliard #1 team who were the most successful individual team. At the end of Term 1 and through the early part of Term 2, the boys were drilled in the basics of Rugby. For most of the boys it was their first foray into the game of Rugby but mouth guards and headgear soon became an integral part of their uniform. The boys had several skill sessions learning the basics before they began to play some practice games. It was marvellous to see the enthusiasm shown by the boys in these sessions. Once they had learnt the basics it was on to games! Each Preparatory House had a team, but the Junior School numbers meant that there were only two teams, one being a combined team. The boys played four rounds on Thursdays, with some exhilarating running rugby being played. The Gala Day on 31st May saw a cold and foggy morning greet our Year 3 boys, as they turned up bright and early – the first boys were there ready to go at 7.00am! They were soon organised by the enthusiastic staff and were playing some fantastic games of Rugby to entertain the many parents watching on the sidelines. There were many highlights on the day, including length of the field tries, fantastic tackles and brilliant passing. This is all despite the large number of boys who had never played before. The boys will get a further opportunity to develop their skills in Year 4 when they will play more games of Rugby. This will enable them to decide on their winter sport in Year 5 having experienced both football codes offered at Trinity. The premier game of the morning was the top of the table clash between Junior School Blue and Hilliard, with Junior School running out winners 20-10. Junior School White also came away with a great win in their final game defeating the Prep School team 30-10. It was pleasing to see so many boys and parents enjoying the morning.
