Trinity News : July 2008
THE AMERICA TRIP REPORT On the first day of December, 2007, 32 students, 12 parents and 3 teachers packed their suitcases, said their goodbyes and were on their way to the land of the brave of the home of the free: The United States of America. Our first destination was San Francisco, California. Within a few hours of arriving, we had visited the popular Height- Ashley district, Union Square and the famous Golden Gate Bridge. The next day was our visit to spooky Alcatraz and then we were on the plane to Las Vegas, Nevada. A glittering jewel in a sparse desert, we made stops at the Monte Carlo, the Luxor, the Mirage and Excalibur hotels. There was no gambling from the students, but Ms Wymer, Mrs Geddes and Mr Dixon no doubt made a few bets when we weren’t looking! After a visit to the monumental Hoover Dam, the extraordinary Grand Canyon, and a stop- off in Phoenix, Arizona, we were on the way to Orlando, Florida. With steaming temperatures even in the height of winter, this was the perfect place to visit MGM-Disney Studios, Magic Kingdom theme park, and the educational Epcot Centre and NASA headquarters. It felt like minutes before we were on the plane to Washington, D.C, where we visited Capitol Hill, the Abraham Lincoln memorial, the Washington Monument, the White House and the enormous Smithsonian Museum. A few days later, we made a day trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and its world- renowned Liberty Bell before it was off to New York; where we stopped off at Time Square, Broadway, SoHo, Greenwich Village, the World Trade Centre site, the Statue of Liberty lookout, the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Centre, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, several charming subway stations and a chilly late-night NFL match in New Jersey. Although several mothers got some great shopping done on Fifth Avenue, no-one protested when we were off to Honolulu, Hawaii, after a quick stop-off in Los Angeles, California. There we visited the mammoth Diamond Head mountain, Waikiki beach, the exotic Hawaiian markets and the Pearl Harbor memorial site. It’s no wonder everyone was asleep on the ten-hour flight back to Sydney two days before Christmas Eve. Ms Wymer, Mr and Mrs Geddes, Mr Dixon and all their exhausted passengers must have been very relieved after arriving safely home from such a successful trip to spend Christmas back in Australia.
