Trinity News : July 2008
top: Putting their heads together with Abdul at the Swimming Carnival – School House Boys, Lewis Horenko, Richard Speirs, Jackson Alexander and Leon Ma. bottom: School House being inspired by Abdul. In a time when many if not all the present lads at School would find it hard to comprehend, I was first introduced to the bare bones of supporting the School. So long ago, indeed, for the bones to be genuine fossils, but in reality, the bones in question formed the skull of Abdul, the School House mascot. I was mightily impressed by Abdul when, as a new teacher at Trinity in1966 at my first House Swimming Carnival, School House produced him as their inspiration and talisman! For many years Abdul continued in his role. Occasionally he disappeared for a while, but he always returned. His latest ‘holiday’ ended when he surfaced again last year, having sojourned in a former School House Housemaster’s garage for several years. Now, resplendently restored, he again is the most formidable of the House mascots. Under the leadership now of Mr Peter Gibson, himself an Old Boy and member of School House, Abdul’s position as mascot has been further reinforced on the sleeve embroidery of the School House sports shirt. No doubt many Old Boys of School House remember Abdul. We were wondering whether there are any Old Boys of the 1960s and earlier who may know of Abdul’s origin, no doubt on a farm somewhere, for in those days the Boarding House had a large complement of country lads in it. If anyone does know, we would be pleased to hear of it! Best wishes to Abdul in his ossification as he finds some fame, and may it be many more years before he finally crumbles into dust!
