TRINITY NEWS 23 Currently, we have 26 boys with a wide range of abilities from Years 8-12 registered in the Mathematics Club. Closely linked with the POTT programme, the club provides opportunities for the boys to develop mathematical concepts and skills through an engaging variety of worthwhile and satisfying mathematical tasks. The Club focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques which included learning: ´ about learning to think mathematically ´ to develop patience and persistence in problem solving ´ to directly engage boys in mathematical materials and give them opportunities to achieve a level of mastery Some major activities worked on this year include: ´ Measuring latitude at the equinox ´ The Mathematical analysis of Fireworks on New Year’s Eve ´ Using Mathematics to fnd the centre of an earthquake ´ Testing the Mathematical difference between tap water and bottled water The Club has been to Canberra where they improved their Mathematics knowledge through activities such visits to the Australian National University Mathematics Department; the Canberra Space Dome and Observatory; Questacon; Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex and CSIRO Discovery. The “Mathematics Club Matters” competition in the Head Master’s Bulletin proved very popular. Fantastic prizes, drawn weekly, given to the winners came from Subway, McDonalds, CASIO and APPLE. Congratulations to Term I prize winners, Julian Duong (7He) and Saumil Shah (12Ke) who received the major prize of an Apple iTouch drawn from the Middle School and Senior School box.
