Trinity News : November 2008
INDUCTION SERVICE The Latin words Sine cura—without care—provide the root of the word sinecure, meaning a position of honour which carries no responsibility. It was an expression used by the Head Master during the simple yet solemn service on Monday October 13 when the House Captains and Prefects for 2009 were inducted into their positions. Both the Head Master and Guest Speaker, Rear Admiral Rowan Moffitt AM AO RAN, himself an Old Boy (73) of the School emphasised in their addresses the concept of servant-leadership, and how such positions held responsibility as well as honour, and the exercising of them was an ongoing and developing process. After taking their Oath of Office, the boys were presented with hatbands and badges, these latter traditionally being pinned on to the recipient by a family member, after which the boys were presented to the School. The Prefects and House Captains also signed their names in the Prefects’ Register. We wish them all a successful year of solid leadership and service to the School. | Ron Ogier above left: signing the Prefects’ Register are (l-r) Nathan Saad (12Hi), Alexander Constantinidis (12Ar) (partly obscured), Daniel Chay (12Du), Peter Amditis (12Ar) Hayden Lammiman (12WJ) Craig Smart (12 Hi), Alex Gohari (12WSH) and Joseph Fahmy 12 La) top right: The School Captain and Vice Captains with the Head Master and Guest of Honour. These boys were Ed Leaney and Tim Avranitis (who were both in Year 12 and School Prefects), Lin Yang in Year 8 (who was previously a dayboy in School House), Matthew Lee (from Wollongong), Ben Trabinger (from Canberra) and Adrian Chang (from Malaysia). All of these boys have made a successful transition into Boarding and have quickly developed friendships with the other Boarders. We farewelled Mr John Giannakis during Term 3 this year. John was a long-serving and much loved Boarding House Staff member who joined the Boarding House in 2001. His time in Boarding was celebrated with the Farewell Dinner held in his honour. John shared a close bond with the Senior boys and a number of Old Boys returned for this dinner to wish him well. He will be missed and everyone in the Boarding Community wishes him well in his new role of Head Economics and Assistant Boarding Housemaster at the prestigious Wellington College in England. In staffing news, Mr David Galluzzo joined the Boarding House Staff. David is a well-known member of staff as Second Master of the Middle School as well as a Mathematics teacher. He will certainly be of great assistance to the House. Mrs Heidi Broadbent was another new addition to the Boarding House Staff team as a casual staff member. Heidi is also a teacher of Mathematics and has been involved in Day Boarding in recent years. In other staffing news, our congratulations are extended to Mr Peter Wilkins who was appointed to Director of Activities. Peter is our remaining long-serving Boarding Staff member and still remains as part of the team.
