Farewell, Christine Ballard… “A MOTHER IN ISRAEL” “A Mother in Israel” is a leader of her family who prophetically foresees what is best for each member and judges each of them with the rare blend of wisdom and compassion which heaven has granted her for fulfilling her role. From Love of the Land - Rabbi Mandel Weinbach. "It all seems so much smaller than I remember!" was the comment of a strapping senior lad as he returned after some years to the kindergarten area at Strathfield. The kindergarteners were certainly still small—a veritable army of Munchkins flowed in an ever-surging tide around the space below the adults' knees! And truly, much that was small was there on the Friday afternoon of June 20, the occasion being the farewell of Mrs Christine Ballard, who is retiring after 36 years as kindergarten teacher at the Preparatory School. It was only the memories of the lad and the current class of students that were small. Everything else was large indeed: the crowd of parents and well wishers, the large number of fruit drinks and cakes, the enormous farewell cake made by Mrs Anky Noble, and most of all, the large heart of Christine Ballard, who after so many years of devoted service to her calling is leaving us. Large too is the contribution she has made to the lives of so many lads who have passed through her kind, loving yet no-nonsense care as she encouraged them in their first steps along the road of their formal education. Large too the affection in which she is held, and large too the numbers of now grown up men who owe her a large debt of gratitude for her calm and effective teaching in their far-off kinder days. Christine Ballard, petite in body but prodigious in achievement – A Mother in Israel indeed – we salute you and may the Lord deal kindly with you in your retirement.
